Submarines

US LA class submarine travelling at 10 knots with the conning tower just protruding through the surface. Although the tower comprises only a small part of the total volume, it is much closer to the surface and thus makes a very large contribution to the wave system.
In this image the main hull is about to protrude. The waves made by the still-submerged bow of the vessel are now very apparent.
The main hull has begun to pierce the surface but some of the larger waves lap over the top portion. Waves created at the stern can be seen clearly, as can their interference with waves created further upstream.
As the main hull emerges further through the surface, the wave pattern becomes more like that due to a normal surface-piercing vessel. Waves lap at the sides of the hull giving it a caterpillar-like appearance when viewed from above.
